She had written letters to the local paper, even to a national, protesting about a projected by-pass to her village, and, looking at a map, the route was nowhere near where she lived and it wasn't as if the area was attractive. I was more than puzzled, I was intrigued.

The enquiry into the route of the new by-pass to the village was due to take place shortly, and I wanted to know what it was that motivated her. So it was that I found myself knocking on a cottage door, being received by Mary Smith and then being taken for a walk to the woods.

"I've always loved this place", she said, "it has a lot of memories for me, and for others. We all used it. They called it 'Lovers lane'. It's not much of a lane, and it doesn't go anywhere important, but that's why we all came here. To be away from people, to be by ourselves " she added.

It was indeed pleasant that day and the songs of many birds could be heard. Squirrels gazed from the branches, quite bold in their movements, obviously few people passed this way and they had nothing to fear. I could imagine the noise of vehicles passing through these peaceful woods when the by-pass was built, so I felt that she probably had something there but as I hold strong opinions about the needs of the community over-riding the opinions of private individuals, I said nothing. The village was quite a dangerous place because of the traffic especially for old people and children, their safety was more important to me than an old woman's whims.

"Take this tree", she said pausing after a short while. "To you it is just that, a tree. Not unlike many others here". She gently touched the bark. "Look here, under this branch, what can you see?"

"It looks as if someone has done a bit of carving with a knife" I said after a cursory inspection.

"Yes, that's what it is!" she said softly. "There are letters and a lover's heart".

I looked again, this time more carefully. The heart was still there and there was a suggestion of an arrow through it. The letters on one side were indistinct, but on the other an 'R' was clearly visible with what looked like an 'I' after it. "Some budding romance?" I asked, "did you know who they were?"

"Oh yes, I knew them", said Mary Smith, "it says RH loves MS".

I realised that I could be getting out of my depth, and longed to be in my office, away from here and this old lady, snug, and with a mug of tea in my hand.

She went on …"He had a penknife with a spike for getting stones from a horse's hoof, and I helped him to carve my initials. We were very much in love, but he was going away, and could not tell me what he was involved in the army. I had guessed of course. It was the last evening we ever spent together，because he went away the next day, back to his Unit. "

Mary Smith was quiet for a while, then she sobbed. "His mother showed me the telegram. 'Sergeant R Holmes ….. Killed in action in the 9)invasion of France'".

"'I had hoped that you and Robin would one day get married" she said, "He was my only child, and I would have loved to be a Granny, they would have been such lovely babies'- she was like that! "

"Two years later she too was dead. 'Pneumonia, following a chill on the chest' was what the doctor said, but I think it was an old fashioned broken heart. A child would have helped both of us."

There was a further pause. Mary Smith gently caressed the wounded tree, just as she would have caressed him. "And now they want to take our tree away from me." Another quiet sob, then she turned to me. "I was young and pretty then, I could have had anybody, I wasn't always the old woman you see here now. I had everything I wanted in life, a lovely man, health and a future to look forwards to".

She paused again and looked around. The breeze gently moved through the leaves with a sighing sound. "There were others, of course, but not a patch on my Robin!" she said strongly. "And now I have nothing - except the memories this tree holds. If only I could get my hands on that awful man who writes in the paper about the value of the road they are going to build where we are standing now, I would tell him. Has he never loved, has he never lived, does he not know anything about memories? We were not the only ones, you know, I still meet some who came here as Robin and I did. Yes, I would tell him!"

I turned away, sick at heart.

People in Love Are Blind to Pretty Faces

A built-in aversion to attractive members of the opposite sex may help cement monogamous relationships

If your loved one claims to “only have eyes for you” this Valentine’s Day, it might be truer than you think. Research shows that people in a committed relationship who have been thinking about their partner actually avert their eyes from attractive members of the opposite sex without even being aware they are doing it.

Psychologist Jon Maner of Florida State University and his colleagues flashed pictures of faces on a computer screen for half a second, following it immediately with a square or circle, which participants had to identify by pushing the correct button. Earlier research using this method has found that it takes longer for viewers to shift their attention away from attractive faces of the opposite sex.

Maner, however, took subjects who were married or living together monogamously and asked half of them to write about feelings of love for their partner and the other half to write about a happy experience. Those who wrote about love actually turned their attention away from attractive members of the opposite sex even more quickly than they looked away from average-looking people. Subjects who wrote about being happy, however, remained as distracted by a pretty face as ever.

This unconscious attentional bias probably evolved to help men and women stay in monogamous relationships, which in humans tend to have a reproductive advantage, Maner explains: “This whole research area is guided largely by an evolutionary perspective. These biases have been built into our psychology to enhance people’s reproductive success.”

The festival marks the end of the celebrations of the Chinese New Year.

Chinese started to celebrate the Lantern Festival from the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 221 AD). Like most other Chinese festivals, there is also a story behind the Festival. It is also believed that the festival has Taoist origins.

This is a festival for people having fun. On the night of the festival, people go on streets with a variety of lanterns under the full moon, watching lions or dragon dancing, playing Chinese riddles and games, and lighting up firecrackers. There is really a lot of fun for the young and the old.

Yuanxiao (glutinous rice ball) or Tangyuan is the special food for the Lantern Festival. It is believed that Yuanxiao is named after a palace maid, Yuanxiao, of Emperor Wu Di of the Han Dynasty. Yuanxiao is a kind of sweet dumpling, which is made with sticky rice flour filled with sweet stuffing.

Yuanxiao is sticky, sweet and round in shape, symbolizing family unity, completeness and happiness.

You can find Yuanxiao in oriental food stores. If you enjoy cooking, here is a recipe of Yuanxiao for you.

Ingredients

4 1/2 cups (500 g) sticky rice flour

butter 7 oz (200 g)

black sesame powder 7 oz (200 g)

sugar 8 oz (250 g)

1 tsp wine

Methods

1. Mix the butter with sesame powder, sugar and wine together. You need to heat a little bit. Make small balls about 0.3-0.4 oz (10 g) each.

2. Take 1/2 cup of sticky rice flour. Add water into the flour and make a flatten dough. Cook it in boiled water and take out until done. Let it cool down. Then put it in the rest of the sticky rice flour. Add water and knead until the dough is smooth.

3. Make the dough into small pieces about 0.3-0.4 oz (10 g) each. Make it like a ball using hands first and then make a hole in the ball like a snail. Put the sesame ball into it and close it up.

4. Cook them in boiled water. Make sure to keep stirring in one direction while cooking. When they float on the water, continue to boil for about one minute using less heat.

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all constructed boats and left. Except for Love.

Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out until the last possible moment.

When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.

Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said,

Richness, can you take me with you?

Richness answered, No, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you.

Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. Vanity, please help me!

I can't help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat, Vanity answered.

Sadness was close by so Love asked, Sadness, let me go with you.

Oh . . . Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!

Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her.

Suddenly, there was a voice, Come, Love, I will take you. It was an elder. So blessed and overjoyed, Love even forgot to ask the elder where they were going. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her own way. Realizing how much was owed the elder, Love asked Knowledge, another elder, Who Helped me?

It was Time, Knowledge answered.

Time? asked Love. But why did Time help me?

Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, Because only Time is capable of understanding how valuable Love is.

The earliest memories I have are of my kindergarten teacher telling us the fable of the ant and the cricket and repeatedly hammering it into us kids that we had to work hard so that we could enjoy after we got ourselves good jobs. Of course it goes without saying the "good jobs" were well paying jobs and all of us had to aim for those. No one ever asked us what we actually wanted to do. It was all about work hard, study, then get a job and make money.

All I wanted to do was read novels and write them – but creative writing is not something that is encouraged. It does not ensure a five figure salary. I was brainwashed all through school to become a doctor and even pushed into taking science in high school. I know many people who sing well, are wonderful painters or the most awesome cooks but were not allowed to pursue these talents as a vocation. This has resulted in a work force that is full of mediocre workers stifled in their nine-to-five jobs, while their true purpose, their true vocation is forgotten.

A true vocation is something that is sheer joy to work at. It liberates, it sets the soul on fire. It is a pleasure to watch a person who is motivated by his own self. It is a rare and absolutely uplifting sight. I once had the pleasure of watching a few young people singing and playing the guitar on a hillside. The pure joy in their faces and in the music they made - it was wonderful.

This brings me to the crux of the matter - Is it important to make money or is it important to follow your dream? I wanted to write so I wiggled out of the career in medicine that my parents hoped I would pursue. It is another matter that many years passed before I could seriously take up writing. I truly believe that it is important to follow your dream - unless of course your dream is to rule the world or harm other people or damage the ecology. In me, I think the world lost a mediocre doctor who's heart would not be in healing - so it was no great loss. It would have just been a career - not a vocation.

Good posture has many benefits. With good posture, you will experience improved physical, emotional, and mental health. Here are 5 reasons to have good posture.

Good posture contributes to the health of your spine. If you have a healthy spine, you will decrease the likelihood of back pain. A lot of neck and back pain and brittleness come from years of uneven stresses on your spinal column or from misaligned vertebrae constantly grinding against each other. Poor posture can also cause stretched out or shortened ligaments around the vertebrae, which can lead to discomfort and increase the risk of injuries, headaches and TMJ.

Your posture affects the health of your organs. Poor posture can constrict or put pressure on organs, restricting blood flow to them and inhibiting their proper functioning. It can also lead to tension in the body, which could prevent the smooth muscles of the digestive system and respiratory tract from working as they should. Those muscles need to be relaxed to do their work.

Posture influences confidence and sense of overall well-being. Feeling well-balanced and comfortable affects the way you feel about yourself and the way others perceive you. You feel more powerful when your body feels strong and stable. When you stand up tall and have your shoulders back, your body is naturally more relaxed and your breathing is easier. Yoga master BKS Iyengar told his students, “Always keep your armpit chest open and you’ll never be depressed.”

Good posture leads to better body mechanics. This means that your athleticism will improve, so you’ll perform better in physical activities and also enjoy them more. You will tire less easily, feel less sore after you exercise, and also be less prone to injuries.

Proper posture will enhance cognitive function because a properly aligned spinal cord will be able to send and receive messages to the brain unimpeded. All of the factors mentioned above will also aid your cognitive function. You will be less distracted by pain and fatigue, and you will sleep better. You’ll feel more confident and relaxed, and improved organ function will mean more nutrients and energy are available to nourish your brain.

Growing Roots

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Dr. Gibbs. He didn’t look like any doctor I’d ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard. I remember him as someone who was a lot nicer than 1)circumstances warranted.

When Dr. Gibbs wasn’t saving lives, he was planting trees. His house sat on ten acres, and his life’s goal was to make it a forest.

The good doctor had some interesting theories concerning plant 2)husbandry. He came from the “No pain, no gain” school of 3)horticulture. He never watered his new trees, which flew in the face of conventional wisdom. Once I asked why. He said that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you water them, each successive tree generation will grow weaker and weaker. So you have to make things rough for them and 4)weed out the 5)weenie trees early on.

He talked about how watering trees made for shallow roots, and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in search of 6)moisture. I took him to mean that deep roots were to be treasured.

So he never watered his trees. He’d plant an oak and, instead of watering it every morning, he’d beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. Smack! Slap! Pow! I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention.

Dr. Gibbs 7)went to glory a couple of years after I left home. 8)Every now and again, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I’d watched him plant some twenty-five years ago. They’re 9)granite strong now. Big and 10)robust. Those trees wake up in the morning and beat their chests and drink their 11)coffee black.

I planted a couple of trees a few years back. Carried water to them for a 12)solid summer. Sprayed them. Prayed over them. The whole nine 13)yards. Two years of 14)coddling has resulted in trees that expect to be 15)waited on hand and foot. Whenever a cold wind blows in, they tremble and chatter their branches. Sissy trees.

Funny things about those trees of Dr. Gibbs’. 16)Adversity and 17)deprivation seemed to benefit them in ways comfort and ease never could.

Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I stand over them and watch their little bodies, the rising and falling of life within. I often pray for them. Mostly I pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I’ve been thinking that it’s time to change my prayer.

This change has to do with the inevitability of cold winds that hit us at the core. I know my children are going to encounter hardship, and I’m praying they won’t be naive. There’s always a cold wind blowing somewhere.

So I’m changing my prayer. Because life is tough, whether we want it to be or not. Too many times we pray for ease, but that’s a prayer seldom met. What we need to do is pray for roots that reach deep into 18)the Eternal, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won’t be 19)swept 20)asunder.

circumstances: n. Thirteen months ago, in a Florida library he took a book off the shelf and found himself intrigued with the notes in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind.

In front of the book, he discovered the previous owner’s name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he located her address. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond.

During the next year and one-month the two grew to know each other through the mail. A Romance was budding. John requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like. Later they scheduled their first meeting-7:00 pm at Grand Central Station in New York.

"You'll recognize me, " she wrote, "by the red rose I'll be wearing on my lapel." So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for the girl with the red rose.

A young woman in a green suit was coming toward him, her figure long and slim and her eyes were blue as flowers. Almost uncontrollably he made one step closer to her, and just at this moment he saw Hollis Maynell-a woman well past 40. The girl was walking quickly away. He felt as though he split in two, so keen was his desire to follow her, and yet so deep was his longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned him and upheld his own.

He did not hesitate. He squared his shoulders and said, "I’m John, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?"

The woman smiled, "I don’t know what this is about, son," she answered, "but the young lady in the green suit begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should tell you that she is waiting for you in the restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!"

It’s not difficult to admire Miss Maynell’s wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in it's response to the unattractive.

<p style="MARGIN: 0px="0px" 3px="3px" 15px">There was once a farmer who had a fine olive orchard. He was very hardworking, and the farm always prospered under his care. But he knew that his three sons despised the farm work, and were eager to make wealth, trough adventure.

<p style="MARGIN: 0px="0px" 3px="3px" 15px">When the farmer was old, and felt that his time had come to die, he called the three sons to him and said, "My sons, there is a pot of gold hidden in the olive orchard. Dig for it, if you wish it."

<p style="MARGIN: 0px="0px" 3px="3px" 15px">The sons tried to get him to tell them in what part of the orchard the gold was hidden; but he would tell them nothing more.

But no pot of gold was to be found. It seemed as if someone must have stolen it, or as if the farmer had been wandering in his wits. The three sons were bitterly disappointed to have all their work for nothing.

<p style="MARGIN: 0px="0px" 3px="3px" 15px">The next olive season, the olive trees in the orchard bore more fruit than they had ever given; when it was sold, it gave the sons a whole pot of gold.

BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- U.S. researchers have created the world's first "human eye" camera that could revolutionise photography, according to meida reports Thursday.

The prototype device is about the same size and shape as a real eye and has a curved "retina" that is sensitive to light.

Digital cameras work by focusing light onto a silicon chip containing light-sensitive pixels. But expanding the field of view leads to distortion around the edges. That's why vertebrate eyes are round -- to capture more of a scene without losing clarity.

The bowl-shaped electronic "retina" made of silicon could usher in a new generation of distortion-free digital and video cameras.

"This approach allows us to put electronics in places where we couldn't before," said John Rogers, an engineer at the University of Illinois, who led the research along with Yonggang Huang of Northwestern University.

Experiments already under way are testing other potential applications, including a thin, pliable monitor to detect electrical signals travelling across the undulating surface of the human brain.

Scientists have shown that there is a degree of truth in the old adage that love is blind. They have found that feelings of love lead to a suppression of activity in the areas of the brain controlling critical thought.

It seems that once we get close to a person, the brain decides the need to assess their character and personality is reduced. The study, by University College London, is published in NeuroImage. The researchers found that both romantic love and maternal love produce the same effect on the brain.

They suppress neural activity associated with critical social assessment of other people and negative emotions.

The UCL team scanned the brains of 20 young mothers while they viewed pictures of their own children, children they were acquainted with, and adult friends.

The team found that the patterns of brain activity were very similar to those identified in an earlier study looking at the effects of romantic love.

Both studies recorded increased activity in parts of the brain's "reward system".

When these areas are stimulated--as they can be by food and drink, or even monetary gain--they produce feelings of euphoria.

But perhaps more surprisingly, both studies also showed reduced levels of activity in the systems necessary for making negative judgements.

Lead researcher Dr Andreas Bartels said it was crucial that both romantic and maternal love were viewed by the brain in a highly positive way--because both were crucial to the perpetuation of the species.

Traditional Top Ten

Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake

Orioles Singing in the Willows

Three Pools Mirroring the Moon / 双峰插云 Twin Peaks Piercing in Cloud

南屏晚钟 Evening Bell Ringing at Nanping Hill / 雷峰夕照 Leifeng Pagoda in Evening Glow

Lingering Snow on the Broken Bridge

New Top Ten

Dreaming of Tiger Spring at Hupao Valley /龙井问茶 Enjoying Tea at Dragon Well

Nine Creeks Meandering through a Misty Forest /云栖竹径 Bamboo-lined Path at Yunqi

宝石流霞 Precious Stone Hill Floating in Rosy Cloud /玉皇飞云 Clouds Scurrying over Jade Emperor Hill

满陇桂雨 Sweet Osmanthus Rain at Manjuelong Village /吴山天风 Heavenly Wind over Wu Hill

阮墩环碧 Ruan Gong Islet Submerged in Greenery /黄龙吐翠 Yellow Dragon Cave Dressed in Green

其他 Others

Lingyin Temple

Lakeside

Future World Park

Hefang Street

Zhonghe Multidimensional Highway

Hangzhou silk

Zhang Xiaoquan scissors

West Lake Longjing Tea

West Lake lotus root powder

《西游记》Pilgrimage to the West;
